Welcome to the memorial page for

Harold L. McCarville

September 15, 1928 ~ April 5, 2017 (age 88)

Harold L. McCarville, age 88, of McCook, NE passed away Wednesday, April 5, 2017 at Community Hospital in McCook.

Harold was born September 15, 1928 in Martin, South Dakota to parents George J. and Dorothy Florence (Funk) McCarville.  He was one of twelve children.  As a young boy, Harold moved from Martin to Southern Missouri in an old covered truck bed pulled by a team of horses.  The family lived in Missouri until Harold’s father took a job at the Army Air Base north of McCook during World War II.  Harold attended school at a country school near the base.

In 1948, Harold’s family moved to Arkansas.  Harold chose to stay in McCook to be near his future bride, Phyllis Brunswick.  He lived in a bunk house with Phyllis’ brothers on the Brunswick farm.  On February 9, 1950, Harold married the love of his life, Phyllis (Brunswick) McCarville in McCook.  They couple made their home in McCook and were blessed with three children.

Throughout the years, Harold was employed by Granger Trucking, Co., Drake Oil and as a Diesel Mechanic for the Nebraska Department of Roads.  In his spare time, he was a shade tree mechanic who enjoyed long conversations while working on vehicles for his family and friends.  Harold was also a member of the McCook Eagles Club where he and Phyllis spent their Friday nights eating a hamburger for dinner and playing darts or shuffleboard.  They competed in many dart and shuffleboard competitions around the state and loved to square dance the night away on the dance floor.  The warm summer evenings found Harold and Phyllis sitting in their lawn chairs cheering on coed softball games at the Jaycees Complex near their home.  Following his retirement from the Department of Roads, Harold enjoyed driving a truck during wheat and corn harvest, and he also used his diesel mechanic skills to keep everything running smoothly at Heartland Cattle.

Harold was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Rita (in infancy), Catherine Brock and Veronica Tramell; brothers, Hugh (in infancy), Larry, Gene, Leo and Dennis McCarville; son in laws, Dan Brown and Lloyd Jones; sister in laws, Wanda McCarville and Joan McCarville; as well as granddaughter, Tiffany Mosher.

Harold is survived by his wife of 67 years, Phyllis McCarville of McCook; sons Thomas (Sharon) McCarville of Cambridge, NE and Timothy McCarville of McCook; daughter, Teresa Brown of Palisade, NE; brothers, Francis McCarville of Cambridge and Howard McCarville of Harrison, AR; sister, Margaret McCarville of Erie, PA; sister in laws, Wilma McCarville of Van Buren of Van Buren, AR, Elvea McCarville of Honduras and Lori McCarville of Omaha, NE; seven grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and close friends.
