Betty (Swanson) Johnson

Betty J. Johnson, 87, of McCook passed away Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook with her husband and daughter at her bedside.

She was born September 1, 1928 in Huron, South Dakota to Agnes Dahlgren Swanson and Arthur Edward Swanson. Betty graduated from Huron High School in 1946. Jobs while in high school included scooping ice cream and knitting mittens in various colors to sell. She knitted many beautiful afghans, sweaters and Christmas stockings, as well as mittens and caps for Goodwill and the Salvation Army over the years.

She married in January of 1948 and had a son, Richard (Dick) and daughter, Diane.

Betty married Eugene L. Johnson, Sr. in South Sioux City, Nebraska on September 12, 1970. They spent their married life in the Dakota City/South Sioux City, Nebraska area where she worked for the ASCS offices, retiring in 1981. They spent 18 years being snow birds in Texas after retirement and also camping in Wisconsin and being hosts one year. They enjoyed taking bus trips.
The couple moved to McCook in 2002 and then to Highland Park Retirement Center in 2013. Betty moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook in September of 2014.
She was the last of the six Swanson siblings (Fern, Duane, Buddy, Elaine, Betty and Richard).

Survivors include: Husband, Eugene Johnson and daughter Diane (Gene) Purvis all of McCook, Nebraska. She is also survived by her son, Dick (Lorri) Kerns of South Sioux City, Nebraska; their son, Jeff (Rochelle) Kerns of Omaha, Nebraska, along with their daughters, Allie and Clare; also their daughter, Lisa (Brad) Armour of Omaha, Nebraska along with their children, Rachel and Braden. She is also survived by her step-son, Paul Johnson of Phoenix, Arizona.

Cremation was chosen and there will be no visitation or services. Inurnment is at Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell, Nebraska at a later date.
