Charles 'Stan' LaRue

Charles Stanley LaRue passed away August 7, 2015 at Community Hospital in McCook, NE.

Charles, son of Charley A. LaRue and Joyce V. (Shuler) LaRue, was born on May 17, 1938 near Bridgeport, Nebraska.

He attended many different grade schools and then 7th grade through high school in Morrill, Nebraska where he graduated in 1956. Charles received an Associate of Arts Degree from Nebraska Western College in Scottsbluff, NE in 1972, a Bachelor of Science Degree from Dana Lutheran College in Blair NE in 1976, and a Master of Theology Degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 1980.

He was united in marriage with Sharon Ann Giles in Morrill, NE on Dec. 31st 1957.


Charles worked in earth-moving construction and moved oil-rigs from 1956 until 1963. In 1963 he bought a Cat, dozer, scraper and ripper, which he used leveling land, building dams and other construction projects. He often worked with his father when they had larger jobs.

On August 19, 1969 he watched the Billy Graham crusade from Anaheim, California on the television in their mobile home in Terrytown, NE. He accepted Jesus Christ and the following Sunday went to church. He and Sharon became active in the church and in June 1970, he was appointed as Pastor of the United Methodist Church of Bayard, NE where they served until 1972. They served the Craig and Alder Grove UMC from 1972 to 1976 while he attended Dana College, they then moved to Stratford, Oklahoma where they served Stratford United Methodist Church from 1976-1980 while attending Perkins School of Theology at SMU in Dallas.

Upon graduation they moved back to Nebraska, where they served churches at Tilden, Meadow-Grove, and Battle Creek from 1980-1985. From 1985-1988 they served David City and Bellwood United Methodist Churches. In 1988-1995 they served the Friend and Dorchester United Methodist Churches, followed in 1995-1997 with service in the Curtis and Garden Prairie United Methodist Churches. In 1997 he took early retirement and started building their home and shop one mile east of Red Willow Reservoir. In 2002 Charles was asked to minister to the Maywood and Wellfleet United Methodist Churches on a part-time basis.

He and Sharon spent time together fishing and hunting deer. During the deer season their home became a combination deer camp and family reunion. They also spent much of their time together working in their respective shops, hers ceramic, his in either his woodworking or metal shop.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents.

Charles is survived by his wife, Sharon; daughters, Deborah Brooks and husband Roger of North Platte, NE; Carol Cobb and husband John of Kansas City, MO; sons, Charles and wife Pam from Manteo, NC, and Lonnie and wife Diane from Meadow Grove, NE; ten grandchildren and six great grand children.

Memorials may be given in his name to be designated by the family at a later date.

Memorial Service will be Sunday, August 9, 2015 at the United Methodist Church in Wellfleet, NE with Rev. Kay Alnor officiating.
