Eugene E. Balius, age 93, of McCook, NE passed away on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Community Hospital in McCook.

Gene was born April 19, 1927 in McCook to parents Bernard and Elnora Helen (Lans) Balius.  Gene attended school in McCook, leaving high school early to enlist in the United States Army. Gene proudly served his country from 1945 until his Honorable Discharge in 1948.  Upon his return from the service, Gene finished high school and received his GED.

On June 14, 1950, Gene married the love of his life, Marieta Ann (Albrecht) Balius in McCook.  The couple became the proud parents of three children: Terry, Ann and Patricia.  The family made their home in McCook where Gene owned and operated Mobile Oil for many years.  In 1968, Gene began working as a cement truck driver for Cement Products in North Platte, NE where he remained a faithful employee until his retirement in 1992.

Gene was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church as well as a past member of the McCook Eagles Club, the local VFW and the Elks.  He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golfing, and hunting, especially turkey.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marieta Balius in 2017; and son in law, Harry A. Strunk.

Those left to celebrate his life include his children, Terry (Cherre) Balius of Hayes Center, NE, Ann (Steve) Barger of McCook, and Patricia Strunk of Key Largo, FL; in laws, Robert Albrecht and Darlene Albrecht of North Platte, Berniece (Fred) Corey of Pinetop, AZ and Don Shull of Colby, KS; five grandchildren, Stephanie (Casey) Roth, Chelsie (Mike) Slattery, Shane (Kelli) Barger, Todger (Christina) Strunk and Tanner (Elizabeth) Strunk; eight great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.
