Hattie L. Hahn

Hattie Lois (Campbell) Hahn, formerly of McCook, NE passed away Monday May 10, 2021 in Olathe, Kansas.

Hattie was born December 10, 1926, on the family farm near Lodgepole, Nebraska, to Orlo V. and Emma Campbell. After the death of her mother when Hattie was a year and a half old, her father remarried, and the family moved frequently between Idaho, the Colorado front range area and southwestern Nebraska. When Hattie married Lee A. Hahn on May 1, 1948, and moved to his farm in southwest Nebraska, it was her 21st home address. Four children were born to their union. In 1958 they sold the family homestead and moved to an acreage near Boulder, Colorado, their home for 21 years. After Lee’s retirement they built a cabin and lived in the mountains near Nederland, then moved to Hamlet, and later McCook, Nebraska. Following Lee’s death Hattie moved near her younger son and lived at Southern Plaza in Bethany, Oklahoma for 17 years.

Hattie was an alumna of Northwest Nazarene College (now University) in Nampa, Idaho; Colorado State Teachers’ College (now Northern Colorado University) in Greeley, Colorado; and the University of Colorado (Boulder) where she earned her B.S. in History Education in 1968.

Hattie was always active in her local church, often playing the piano and teaching Sunday School to teens. She participated in Bible Study Fellowship and then taught women’s Bible studies until she was 90. She had a heart for teenagers, coaching teen Bible quizzing, and just getting to know individual teens and their interests.

She was artistic and creative, though she never thought of herself that way. Hattie was an accomplished seamstress which later led to making exquisite quilts. She wrote many distinctive songs, as well as beautiful poems, stories and essays. In later years she took up oil painting and presented her children with wonderful paintings that they treasure today. She was a dedicated homemaker, excelling as a cook, gardener, and support to her husband in farm chores, remodeling projects and finally, as his devoted caregiver.

Hattie was preceded in death by her husband, Lee Hahn, of 55 years; her parents; three sisters, infant sister Hazel Campbell, Helen Spracklen, and Ruth Dillon; three brothers, Harvey, Howard, and Hartley Campbell; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Hattie is survived by four children: Roger L. Hahn (Dorothy) of Spring Hill, Kansas; Susan M. Hayes (Randy) of Milton, Washington; Larry G. Hahn (Juanette) of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; and Sally J. Altes of Battle Creek, Michigan; as well as seven grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
