Inger M Jacobs

Inger Margaret (Sophie) Christensen Jacobs departed this life on August 28, 2019 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska at the age of 97.

Inger was born July 30th, 1922, in Grand Forks, North Dakota to Hans and Laura (Nielsen) Christensen. Inger was a First-Generation American. Inger was given the name Inger Margaret at birth and Sophie was added at her christening.

Inger spent her growing up years in Kerrick, Minnesota, attending school there and in Bruno, Minnesota and graduated from Bruno High School in 1940.

Inger married Charles Albert Jacobs on April 3, 1941 in Moose Lake, Minnesota. Six children were born to this union. Two days after they married they moved to Los Angeles, California. Inger continued to live in southern California, with Charles’s aunt, after Charles joined the Army Air Corp and it was during that time that their first son was born. After the war, Inger and Charles moved to Washington State, while expecting their second son. Charles soon re-enlisted and was sent to Brazil.  During this time, Inger moved home to Minnesota with her two little boys. When Charles completed his time in the Air Corps he joined her there and they had three more sons and a daughter. In December 1964, they moved to southern California, living for about six months in Lynnwood and then settling in Whittier where they stayed until the spring of 1980. They then moved to a piece of land alongside the Kettle River, two miles outside of Orient, Washington. It was their home base as they traveled extensively with their 5th-Wheel trailer, going throughout most of the United States visiting family members for two years.  After this time of traveling was over they poured much energy into their land and their home, while still enjoying short trips to visit family. In 1986 they moved to McCook, Nebraska

Inger was a remarkable seamstress and in 1971 was employed by a dress shop to do alterations. That led to doing alterations and sewing projects for individuals which she continued well into her 80s. Also In 1971, she went to work for the Montebello School District working in the cafeteria briefly in one school and then being moved to the cafeteria at a new school when it opened. She stayed at the second school until the spring of 1980 when, after Charles’ retirement, they moved to Washington.

Inger and Charles enjoyed the many benefits of small-town life in McCook, making friends and staying busy. Inger was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary for years. They attended McCook Christian Church and Inger’s attendance continued until she moved to Hillcrest Nursing Home in early 2015.

Inger was preceded in death by her parents, husband Charles, her sons Larry, Curtis, and Terry, her brothers Allen Christensen and Swen Christensen, sister Dora Holmstrom, and grandson Kyle Jacobs.

Inger is survived and remembered by her sons Charles Jacobs and wife Lee of Perry, Georgia, and Duane  Jacobs and wife Patricia of Ruther Glen, Virginia, daughters-in-law, Jeanne Jacobs of Duluth, Minnesota, Pam Jacobs of Visalia, California, and Lisa Jacobs of Gainesville, Georgia, daughter Leeann McCarty and husband Chris of McCook, Nebraska, her brother Gerald Christensen of Duluth, Minnesota, her sister Norma Wernowsky of Northfield, Ohio, special cousins Jack and Naomi Clark of Everett, Washington, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Inger’s life was varied and full but it can be summed up by saying, “If you knew Inger, you loved her.”
