Jean Steward

Jean "Aunt Jean" Steward of Hayes Center passed away Monday, May 19, 2014 at El Dorado Nursing Home in Trenton at the age of 87.

Jean was born on June 15, 1926 at Alva, OK to Cyrus S. and Linda B. (Barney) Steward. The family moved to Vega, Texas where Jean spent most of her childhood. She attended school in Colorado before making a decision to quit so she could help her family. She spent many years going to different sibling's homes where she helped with the children and household chores. When her parents grew older she returned to Vega, TX to care for them. After her father's passing Jean and her mother moved to Rocky Ford, CO for a few years until her mother's passing.

She moved to Hayes Center in the late 70's where she opened Jean's Daycare. She devoted 36 years to children in and around Hayes Center until her health prevented her from working.

Jean was a member of Emmanuel Chapel. She enjoyed sewing often making dresses for her nieces, going places, shopping and with delight giving much of her purchases away, and just spending time with family and friends.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Cyrus and Linda Steward; siblings, infant, Glenn Steward, Opal Arnett, Earl Steward, Louise Echols, Marie McKendree and Louie Lea Hartman.

She is survived by sister, Fern Saine of Harrison, AR; and numerous nieces and nephews; and missing her are a host or relatives and friends.

Memorials may be given in her name.

Memorial services are Saturday, June 7, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Hayes Center High School Gymnasium with Rev. Morris Hartman and Rev. James Echols officiating.

A private family inurnment will be at a later time in Vega, TX.
