Richard "Dick"
Haag
Jul 22, 1951 — Sep 3, 2026
Richard “Dick” Eugene Haag, 75, died September 3 at his home in Indianola after an extended illness.
He was born July 22, 1951, in McCook to Alfred and Evelyn Haag of Danbury.
Dick was known by many for being the life of the party and loved sharing laughs with friends and family.
He and his wife Janet created Bottom Dollar Ranch, a business that has supplied boots, tack and western apparel to people throughout southwestern Nebraska and beyond. The business began at their home in Indianola and moved to its present storefront on McCook’s Norris Avenue in 2020. In addition to greeting customers, Dick loved finding a good deal and couldn’t resist an auction or yard sale.
Many referred to Dick as a jack of all trades. In younger years, he worked in construction and operated a business that serviced grain elevators. While doing so, he developed a reputation for braving heights to make repairs.
He later worked as a truck driver. During this period, he wrote and performed cowboy poetry under the name “Driver Dick.”
Dick developed a love for the cowboy way while growing up on the family farm northwest of Danbury. A proud alum of District 50 country school, he competed in rodeos and worked as a farrier as a young man. He graduated from Beaver Valley High School in 1969.
Dick and Janet Chambers married July 22, 1989.
Perhaps his favorite pastime was watching their children and grandchildren play sports. He attended as many events as he could throughout Nebraska and beyond, even with his failing health. He and Janet also enjoyed camping trips with family and taking business on the road to sell Bottom Dollar Ranch’s merchandise from a trailer.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents.
His children include Justin (Cricket) Haag of Chadron and Melissa (Jason) Stewart of Lexington, who were born during his first marriage to Deanna McChesney.
His children with Janet are Aaron (Ellie) Haag of Lincoln, Mark (Lauren) Haag of Scottsbluff, and stepchildren Jeremy (Kristy) Latimer of McCook and Jen (James) Perry of Azle, Texas.
Other survivors include siblings Bob (Kathy) Haag of Indianola, Dianne (Dean) Jones of Kearney, Darla (Randy) Jordan of McCook and Kendra (Brian) Jefferson of Central City.
Also left to mourn his passing are 17 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. The grandchildren: Sawyer and Kiera Haag, Hunter and Delaney Stewart, Faith and Ryker Haag, Colton and Carter Haag, Zach (Bella) Latimer, Garrett Latimer, Ashlynn (Corbin) Carpenter, Brooklynn Latimer, Miles (Kourtney) Dack, Zander and Cameron Dack, and Brett and Maddy Tryon. Great-grandchildren: Maizie Latimer, and Stetson and Jordan Dack.
Memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, are suggested to the family for future designation.
