Obituary

Robert Joseph McConville passed away on November 2, 2025, at Hillcrest in McCook, NE surrounded by loved ones at the age of 90. He was born in McCook on January 21, 1935, to Thomas and Lillian (Colling) McConville. He grew up in Frontier County with his 6 siblings. He attended country school and graduated from Indianola High School in 1953.

On August 24, 1953, Robert married Kathryn Burton at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola. The start of what would be a marriage of 72 years. They began their life, raising their 4 sons on their farm in Frontier County. As the boys began to take a more active role in the farm, Robert and Kathy began the McConville Insurance Agency in Indianola.

Robert had many hobbies: loved horses, team penning with family and friends and draft horses. He loved restoring vintage cars and tractors. You could always find him at an auction on the weekends. He was always looking for a bargain, Kathy never knew what he would come home with, he could never sit still. Robert loved a good game of cards and marbles and would jump at the chance to ride along to great grandkids ball games.

Robert served in the National Guard for 6 years as a Sargent First Class. He was on the Republican Valley school board for 8 years. They belonged to the Family Folic Square Dancers.

The Catholic Church was the center of Robert and Kathy’s life, he was active in every aspect of the church, he was a member of the Knights of Columbus, he served as acolyte from 1976 till his health would not allow it.

As the years crept up on them, Robert and Kathy moved to Kinship in McCook, in January of 2024, where Robert would still get up at 5 and drive to McDonald’s for breakfast. A fall occurred in April of 2024 that broke his leg would begin the final chapter of his life. He resided at Hillcrest where Kathy rejoined him in April of 2025.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Kathy on September 16, 2025. Robert spent 47 days without her before he rejoined her again in their final resting place. Also preceded in death are an infant son Larry, grandson Rob in 2009, his siblings and their spouses LaMoine, Dick, Eileen Wane, Catherine Remington, Marilyn Malleck and Cecelia Saladen.

He leaves behind to cherish memories of him, his sons and daughters-in-law Dennis and Kem, Bob and Cindy, Tom and Denise, Steve and Kerry 18 grandchildren 50 great grandchildren 4 great-great grandchildren.

Memorial contributions are designated to Indianola Volunteer Fire & Rescue, 102 North 4th Street, Indianola, NE 69034; or to Bartley Volunteer Fire & Rescue, 101 W Walnut St, Bartley, NE 69020.

A public visitation will be held from 6:00-7:00 PM on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at Carpenter Breland Funeral home. A recitation of the rosary will follow at 7:00 PM

A Mass of a Christian Burial will be held at the St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola, NE on Monday, November 10, 2025, at 10:30 AM, with Father Michael Houlihan as celebrant.

Burial with military honors is to follow at St. Catherine’s Catholic Cemetery in Indianola, NE.
