Rose M. Griffing

March 12, 1940 — July 9, 2019

McCook, NE

Rose Marie DeVall Griffing, 79, died on Tuesday, July 9, 2019, at her home in McCook, Nebraska. She was born March 12, 1940, to LeRoy M. and Darlene V. (Tolle) DeVall in Kearney, Nebraska.

On September 3, 1955 Rose married Norvin “Cork” Griffing in Phillipsburg, KS.  To this union four children were born: Linda, Michael, Alan and Susie.

Early in their married life, Rosie and Cork lived in Superior, Nebraska, and moved to Culbertson in 1959. Always a hard worker, Rosie especially enjoyed socializing with her co-workers at TRW and the McCook Gazette. Somehow, she found time to also sew dresses for her daughters and flannel pajamas for all four of her children, can and freeze garden produce, plant flowers, make Christmas candies, and bake runzas and kolaches.

Life for Rosie as an empty nester opened the door to exploring new hobbies and past times, including solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles, shopping with her sister, Delores, watching Kansas City Chiefs football games, buying dolls and other collectibles and antiques at auctions, and refurbishing old dolls, sewing doll clothes for both her granddaughters' dolls as well as her own. Her grandchildren will never forget being greeted at her door on Thanksgiving Day when she wore a Pilgrim's costume she had sewn for herself.

In 1988, Rosie and Cork purchased a liquor store (R &C) and a food truck in Culbertson. They especially enjoyed grilling and serving food to their customers at auctions.

Rosie will always be remembered for her infectious laughter, pranks she played on co-workers, her feistiness, her work ethic, and her love for her family and friends. She loved country music, especially Patsy Cline’s. Cooking Thanksgiving feasts for her family was her favorite. She was a very proud grandmother! She will be forever missed.

Survivors include her children, Susie (Jim) Cartwright, of Grand Island, Alan (Christina) Griffing, of Omaha, Michael (Natalie) Griffing, of Holt, Missouri, and Linda (Dick) Colvin, of St. George, Utah; grandchildren Erica (Dan) Douglas, of Grand Island, Kristin (Morgan Dibbern) Cartwright, of Grand Island, Katie (Esteban Fernandez Lopez) Griffing of Barcelona, Spain, Sean Griffing of Omaha, Eric Griffing of Omaha, Sam Griffing of Holt, Missouri, Zachary (Mackenzie McKay) Griffing  of Plattsburg, Missouri, Melissa (Ward) Prickett of Coto de Caza, California, and Sarah (Michael) Wittry of Columbus, Ohio; great grandchildren, Willa, Pearl, and Silas Douglas, Rowen Cartwright-Dibbern, Emerson and Jackson Prickett, and Annabelle, Asher, and Jude Wittry; sisters Delores Fahrenbruch of McCook, Nebraska and Cindy (Jerry) Mills of Bolivar, New York, special friend Benjamin who Rose considered a grandson and many nieces and nephews.
