Obituary

Roy William (Bill) Edmundson, age 72, of Culbertson, Nebraska, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on September 2, 2026, after a yearlong battle with cancer at his home in rural Culbertson. He was born on February 26, 1954, in Ottumwa, Iowa to Ray and Roberta Edmundson.

Roy (Bill) as he was called by his family went to school in Clear Lake, Iowa and graduated in 1972. Roy loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers. He also enjoyed working on cars. After graduation, he joined the United States Army and went to basic training in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He was medically discharged from basic training before completing.

Roy (Bill) then moved to Southwest Nebraska and worked in construction. After a time, he began a new job with the Burlington Northern Railroad as a welder. In 1977, while working near Kearney NE, he met his beloved wife, Ellen (Blume) Edmundson and the couple married on December 13, 1980 in McCook, Nebraska. At this time Roy (Bill) started a new adventure driving a semi for Grand Island Express. Roy (Bill) drove through all the states except Hawaii and Alaska. After 10 years on the road, he decided to work locally and started working for John Brown Energy in McCook.

In 1992, Roy and Ellen bought a farm northwest of Culbertson, Nebraska and still reside there today. Roy (Bill) also worked for Frenchman Valley H and RW Irrigation in Culbertson. In 1994, the couple was blessed to be able to adopt their infant daughter, Catherine Rose. Roy also worked for Valmont in McCook and farmed, raising black Angus cattle and various crops. In 2007, Roy (Bill) started working for Hitchcock County Road Department District #1 operating as a road grader. He loved this job and would call Ellen at her workplace saying he was going down the road looking out the picture window! He was very proud of his roads, working hard to keep them in good shape. He also watched out for older couples and made sure their roads were in great shape and offered his assistance to them in any capacity to make their lives easier. Roy retired in 2024 from Hitchcock County District #1.

Roy (Bill) enjoyed time with his family and dogs, Daisy and Riley. He enjoyed teaching Cathy how to hunt and fish. They enjoyed their hunting trips together, bringing home many deer and turkey trophies. Another joy in his life was hunting with his brother, Ed and his son, Eric. They took a hunting trip to Texas and have many fond memories.

Preceding Roy in death are his parents; grandparents, Claire and Lulu Edmundson and Frank and Zella Axmear; his mother and father-in-law, Catherine and Anton Blume; as well as his sister-in-law, Anna Montey and brother-in-law, Lee Miller.
