Ruth V. Stewart

Ruth Virginia (Schamel) Stewart of McCook, NE entered into eternal rest on January 1, 2017 at Community Hospital in McCook.  She was 91 years old.

Ruth was one of eight children born to parents Harry A. and Adelaide Marie (Junker) Schamel on August 10, 1925 in Indianola, NE.  Ruth grew up in Indianola, where she also graduated from Indianola High School.

Ruth married the love of her life, Orville D. Stewart on August 19, 1946 in Kansas City, MO.  The couple made their home in Indianola and were blessed with ten children.  Throughout the years, Ruth dedicated her life to being a loving wife and mother.

Ruth was a member of the Indianola United Methodist Church.  She will be remembered for her beautiful flower gardens as well as the vegetable gardens she grew and canned from each year.  She enjoyed tending to her many house plants and spent countless hours behind a sewing machine quilting for her family.  Ruth was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan who especially loved football.  When Ruth wasn’t busy cheering on her children or grandchildren at one of their many events, you could find her enjoying a game of cards with friends.  She loved gaming as well as Bingo.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Orville Stewart; as well as her five sisters, Helen Walz, Elsie Werschke, Iona Harned, Roberta Brooks and Esther Sedlack.

Ruth is survived by her sons, Dale (Cheryl) Stewart of Indianola, Steve (Susan) Stewart of Omaha, NE and Doug Stewart of Indianola; daughters, Cindy (Dutch) Hughes of McCook, Joy (Joe) Marquardt of Holdrege, NE, Shirley (Larry) Brooks of Indianola, Doris (Denis) Stritt of Indianola, Christi Stewart of Gretna, NE, Gloria (Dean) Liess of Indianola and Tammy Stewart of Aurora, CO; brothers Donald “Doc” Schamel of McCook and Robert (Doris) Schamel of Stockton, KS. She is also survived by her twenty four grandchildren, forty eight great grandchildren and numerous step grandchildren.

A Book Signing and Reception with family greeting friends will be held on Wednesday, Jan 4, 2017 from 3 to 5 PM at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home in McCook.

Funeral Services will take place on Thursday, Jan 5, 2017 beginning at 10:30 AM at the Memorial United Methodist Church in McCook with Pastor Jeff Kelley and Pastor Alisa Parde officiating.

Burial will follow in the Indianola Cemetery, Indianola.
