Terry K. Vontz

Terry K. Vontz, age 72, of McCook, NE, a man known for his steady hands, generous heart, and boundless love for his family, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 23, 2025. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, hard work, and devotion. He was cherished by many, especially his family and family friends, who will forever hold his memory close.

Terry was born February 14, 1953 in McCook, NE to parents Leonard and Esther (Brown) Vontz. He was one of five siblings who grew up in McCook, graduating from McCook High School with the Class of 1971.

Terry was a lifelong fixer - of all things, of problems, of moments that needed a steady presence. A skilled plumber and electrician by trade, he was the one everyone called when something needed repair, and he always showed up with his toolbox and a quiet smile. He took pride in his work, but even more so in the people he did it for. Terry developed this work ethic at a young age, growing up working with his family on the farm. When Terry wasn’t doing farm chores, he could be found playing baseball or fastpitch softball with his brother, hunting or fishing.

To his grandchildren he was know as “Poppy”, a title he wore with great pride and joy. He lit up around them, finding pure happiness in their laughter and adventures, never missing a chance to support them from the sidelines of their games or cheer them on in life.

Terry’s favorite place was among his loved ones, whether watching his children, Candy, Sara or Seth and grandchildren, Tyler, Ally, Rhys, Koy and Judd play sports or simply being part of the gathering. His presence brought warmth, comfort and the feeling that everything was going to be alright.

Terry’s hands may rest now, but his impact will live on in every project he fixed, every cheer he gave and every heart he touched. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered as Poppy, the quiet hero of his family.

Terry was proceeded in death by his parents; sister, Mary James; brother in law, Mike Ross and nephew, Brad Ross.

Those left to celebrate his life include his children, Seth (Karen) Vontz of Lincoln, NE, Candy Hayden of Lincoln, NE and Sara Pierce of North Platte, NE; brother, Tom (Mary) Vontz of McCook, NE sisters, Judy Ross of Bartley, NE and Janet (Bob) Brenning of McCook, NE; five grandchildren, Tyler, Ally, Rhys, Koy and Judd; and numerous extended family members and friends.

Memorials in lieu of flowers are suggested to the McCook Youth Baseball Association, P.O. Box 423, McCook, NE 69001.

A Graveside Memorial Service will be held at 12:00pm, on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 in Memorial Park Cemetery, McCook.
