Winifred J. Workman

Winifred J. Workman, age 93, passed away Tuesday, September 20 2016 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook, Nebraska.

Winifred was born January 23, 1923 to Fred and Tina (Grussing) Brandt in Beatrice, Nebraska where she grew up and spent most of her life.

On November 2, 1941 she was united in marriage to Dale Workman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Beatrice.  To that union one daughter, Barbara, was born.

Winifred graduated from Beatrice High School in 1940 and worked at Busboom Insurance Co. until her marriage.  She and her husband lived in Rolla, Missouri and Bella Vista, California as well as El Central, California after Dale entered the Army.  When Dale was shipped overseas during World War II, Winifred lived in Hastings, Nebraska with her parents.

Shortly after his discharge from the Army, the couple returned to Beatrice where Winifred served as a children’s librarian for 22 years.  While in Beatrice she was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School and attending the women’s group there. She belonged to the Beatrice Historical Society and participated in Christian Women’s Club with friends from other churches in the community.  One of her greatest loves was needlework and she enjoyed the fellowship of friends in a stitching club.  She also bowled and square danced before moving to McCook in 1994.

While living in McCook, Winifred was again active in Christian Women’s Club and Friendship   Bible Coffees as well as Our Savior’s Lutheran Church until her health and hearing confined her. She was an avid reader and dog lover and enjoyed visits from her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara, and son-in-law, Gary Wiemers of McCook, one sister, Florene Burton of McCook, a brother, Don Brandt and wife, Marilyn of McCook and her youngest brother, Delbert Brandt of Oklahoma City, Oklaoma. Grandchildren, Sara and husband Jerry Rippen of McCook, Amy and husband Neal Randel of Beatrice, Matt Wiemers and wife Tracy of McCook, T.J. Wiemers and wife Megan of McCook, Tom Wiemers and wife Rebecca of McCook as well as 15 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren.

Preceding Winifred in death was her husband Dale of 73 years, her parents Fred and Tina Brandt, and a great grandson Matthew Wiemers.

Visitation will be held Thursday, September 22, 2016 at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 23, 2016 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, McCook, with Rev. Dr. Bradley J. Brauer officiating.   Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016 at Beatrice Evergreen Cemetery, Beatrice.

Memorials may be given in Winifred’s name to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, 312 Seminole, McCook, NE  69001.
